The Georgian Gentleman’s Library: Evening talk and Q&A

Ever wondered what a Georgian gentleman needed to furnish a respectable library?

Join Jim Dixon, Cromford Mills’ own bookseller and antiques dealer, as he illuminates the history of libraries and touches upon the essential books that Georgians such as Sir Richard Arkwright would have had in their homes.

During the evening, Jim will discuss the development of the English country house, and the important role a library played in the running of a gentleman’s estate. He will also give us an insight into the wider decoration of such libraries, which frequently included maps, atlases, globes, fine furniture and antiques. There will be time for questions at the end.

Jim Dixon sells second-hand books, antiques, maps and prints across Derbyshire. He runs Countryside Books at Cromford Mills, where he stocks antiquarian and collectible books on topics such as natural history, field sports, fishing, gardening, and local history. As well as a bookseller and antiques dealer, Jim is a Board Member of the National Lottery Heritage Fund and writes a nature column for The Times. His career has included working for the RSPB, Defra and the Peak District National Park, where he was Chief Executive. Jim lives in Two Dales near Matlock.

This online talk will be run by the Arkwright Society.
