STANDING IN THIS PLACE EXHIBITION AT MASSON MILLS TEXTILE MUSEUM

Sat 5th Apr - Sun 2nd Nov

Standing in This Place is an ambitious new sculpture which gives representation to the underrepresented, give voice and recognition to the contributions of thousands of unnamed women who were the driving forces behind the East Midlands cotton textile industry during Industrialisation.  A life-size bronze statue representing a white mill worker/lace maker, and a black enslaved woman uprooted to the Americas has been installed in the Green Heart of the rejuvenated Broad Marsh area in Nottingham City Centre.

At Masson Mills for the first time the supporting art work, costumes, research about the cotton textile workers and enslaved women and a bronze bust by artist Rachel Carter and the Legacy Makers group are available to view all together for the first time giving an inspiring background to this project and the textile heritage of our area. The exhibition also includes ‘Speak Her Name’ the accompanying work which delved into the lives of 100 historic women and represented them with an art installation featuring over 300 embroidery hoops.
