WATERPOWER IN BELPER AND THE DERWENT VALLEY: PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE

Sun 21st Jul

Join experienced guide Ian Jackson for a walk around the waterways of the Belper Mill complex to see how waterpower has been harnessed on the site for nearly 250 years.

Venue: Meet at the Bandstand in Belper River Gardens
Time: 2pm
Cost: Adults £7.50, Children under 16 free
Booking: Essential visit: Strutt’s North Mill, Belper

The easy walk will explain how the Strutts used 11 waterwheels (including 6 ‘flood wheels’) to power the site and how the English Sewing Cotton Company went on to introduce hydro-electric power to the site. Ian’s research also looks at the wider Derwent Valley and the future potential of waterpower.
