Rucksack Making Course
Learn the skills to make your own waxed organic cotton rucksack over a weekend course enjoying the company of fellow creatives whilst soaking up the ambient and inspiring atmosphere at the Museum of Making.
The course will include teaching on fabric selection, fabric cutting, sewing bag construction, following a pattern and zip insertion. This course is taught by Abigail Wastie a local textile artist passionate about sustainable textiles. Abigail will teach you through the bag making process step by step in a relaxed supportive manner. Abigail sources all the materials for her courses with quality sustainability at the forefront of the workshop (scroll down to read all the interesting materials, trims and pattern included in this course).
During the course, you will also have opportunities to take a break from sewing to explore some items in The Museum of Making’s textile collection.
By the end of the two-day course you will have made a beautiful organic waxed rucksack.

Who is this course for?
This course is beginner and Intermediate friendly and suitable for adults (18+).
The group is limited to six students to ensure every student has lots of quality teaching time with Abigail.
Do I need to bring anything?
All materials and equipment are provided. Each attendee will receive organic cotton oilskin (made in the UK, finished to age and wear beautifully), threads, bag zip and quality metal pocket zip, cotton wadding, several meters of luxury webbing Oeko-Tex certified, wooden shed sticks, ,wooden dowelling for hanging your workshop creation, printed version of rucksack instructions and paper pattern, metal bag hardware, as well as use of all relevant equipment and tools at the Museum of Making.
Lunch is available to purchase from the River Kitchen at the Museum of Making or various eateries and shops in the city centre.
Course Booking Terms and Conditions
Please note that if you choose to cancel your place your ticket price will be refunded minus the Eventbrite service fee (6.5% of ticket price + £0.49). Your total refund is dependent on the number of days’ notice given:
• 7 or more days before the event – full refund (minus the Eventbrite fee).• 6 – 3 days before the event – refund of 50% (minus the Eventbrite fee).• Within 2 days of the event – you will not be refunded.
In the event that Derby Museums needs to cancel a workshop, your ticket will be refunded in full.
You will receive a full refund up to and on the day if you have received a positive Covid-19 test result, or are told to self-isolate.
