Research Workshop

Dates: Monday 11th April and Tuesday 12th April
Times: 9.30am to 1pm each day

A FREE workshop is planned for researchers with an interest in the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site, to better help them understand and get more out of the resources available.

The on-line event, across the two mornings of April 11 and April 12, will be:

• Looking at archives, landscapes and the environment, photographs, maps, buildings, the Historic Environment Record, old handwriting and other resources.
• Seeing how research fits within the Research Framework for the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site.
• Hearing about case studies using the materials available.

Derbyshire’s Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site is the birthplace of the factory system, which ushered in the Modern Industrial Age. It’s a complex site, with lots of research possibilities. This workshop is aimed at helping researchers discover what information is out there and how they can access and understand it. It will help you learn how to better understand original documents, photographs and maps, as well as buildings and landscapes within the valley.

Whether you’re just starting out or more experienced, it’s a chance to discover new avenues for research and be reassured you are not alone in finding out about local history.

Monday’s and Tuesday’s FREE sessions can be booked by emailing dvmwhs@derbyshire.gov.uk. You need to put ‘April Workshop’ in the heading, then state your name, the day or days you wish to book for, and the email address you wish used to receive the viewing link. This information will only be held in connection with the event and deleted after the workshops have been completed. If you wish us to retain your email, so we can send you information about similar future events, please state that in your email.

After booking, you will receive confirmation, and the week before the workshops you will be sent a link for watching the speakers on Microsoft Teams. Microsoft Teams can be accessed through the free Teams App on mobile devices (this needs downloading before the event), or through your browser on a computer. Your device will need video and audio capability for you to fully take part. You will also require a reliable internet connection. Please make sure your set-up satisfies the technical requirements before joining.

Access on both days will be from 9.15am.

Bookings for all sessions will close at 5pm on Wednesday 6 April.
